"I just wanted to have fun," says Ellie Owen, brains behind the Trappy Hour and Pas Le Mode, "until it became a thing." You won't really understand what the "thing" is until you find yourself in the middle of the dance floor surrounded by the most beautiful people in Harlem.

The Menswear Mix will be held air Harlem Nights where DJ Kenneth Kyrell will be spinning and TJ Jones with Hustle & Nap will be filming his documentary on the rise of black menswear designers. Sergio Wonder also will be serving 5 signature cocktails and handing out free gift sets.

NEW YORK, NY -  Almost two years after our initial meet & greet, I finally got a chance to catch up with one of my favorite influences, Brooklyn based singer Devin Tracy. One might first be enamored by Devin's super sweet aura, but the vocalist is also known  for is epic floral retouched images of classic contributors to music such as Brandy, Tweet, Solange, Sade and a sea of other legends in their own right. The more I was exposed to his gift, the more I noticed his affect on my own craft.

For example, I've never cared too much to work with floral prints because it limits the design of the garment. Working with Devin and taking notice his execution has changed that habit for me.  As a menswear designer,  I find that I'll always want my work to be received in a particular light. However, as a creative libra,  my emotions might take control of the aesthetic and force an unexpected result. If there's one thing I've learned from the artist is that we have the ability to control what we know about romance and use it to our advantage.

"MY GUILTY PLEASURE IS TUMBLR"

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK - There's nothing I love more than soaking up those moving images that we all find floating around on Tumblr. Thankfully I'm not ashamed to spend the time using it to answer inspiration's call. Furthermore, don't you just love that direct connection with pop culture? Expression is that medium is one of the greatest resources our generation certainly doesn't take for granted. And honesly, being apart of iconic movements like posting and re-blogging flawless selfies for #BlackOut speakes for itself.

Here are some of my own favorite expressions.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -  We'd like to thank Stylist Tori Elizabeth  for including three key pieces from our men's collection in The Colored Girl Creative Agency's most recent campaign.  One of the greatest things we adore about their movement is their dedication to influencing "change one campaign at a time."  To read more about the establishment, visit www.TheColoredGirl.com.

Singer Davi Akei Talks "Authentic Soul" Album

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK - I've recently been spending some time working as a Styling Director on a project with Soul artist Davi Akei (Dah-vee  Ah-kee) who released his latest single "Distance" earlier this month. It's certainly been an eyeopening journey returning to the world of a musician and experiencing his rigorous approach to achievement first hand. With the debut of his first mainstream EP "Authentic Soul"  set to release this March, filming a docuseries in association with HustleAndNap , and taking the time to give back to the young black creatives, he seems to be on the right path to making a big difference for the new world. I sat down with the Chicago native after styling the 6th look for his cover shoot, just to get a tighter grasp of his musical mission.

SW:  Is music a choice or a consequence for you?

DA: I think it's a consequence of my gifts. It's a companion for life that I'd would just do anything for? Thats  how warmly I feel towards music. My life has soundtrack because I'm always listening to or creating it so this is me sharing my gift with the world.

SW: You mentioned in your docuseries that "music is always working for you", how is that?

DA: I mean, in the sense that it's never off. It's me wanting to learn another instrument, to write another song, which would normally require me to be extremely sensitive to life and it's humor or whatever. I feel like music and I have a partnership and that's why I think it works for me and not against me.

SW: What are the things that trigger you to write music?

Those pins in life that add to the bigger picture of course are a huge contribution. As an artist, having to tap into those memories and raw emotions are important for me to hold onto if I really want to convey that in my voice or the way I deliver a message.

SW: Have you learned anything new or shocking while recording "Authentic Soul"?

DA: I learned that I can creatively expand in areas where I didn't think to challenge myself before. That writing from different vantage points, I'm able to embrace my diversity. Writing for different artists while still maintaining that authenticity can also be a lot of fun too. I also learned the true importance of teamwork and that you're only as strong as your weakest link. My team has really helped me propel this vision I've had for so long and I'm really grateful for the hard work of those that have been apart of this project.

SW: What would you consider to be your "Wonder Factor"?

DA: I think my wonder factor is that my passion for music is vivid, my soul is authentic to the sound and my entire heart is all the way in this. I have the means to speak to the multitude, just to affirm them and their quest for love isn't wrong. I really think my artistry is tough and that's fine. I want to get people to get back to feeling the truth in music and say "I was just feeling that" or "This is precisely what I'm going through right now" and still be able to see that that good things can still come from those moments when you feel you're at lowest. Experiences and sharing them is what brings us as humans together. We're not living this life by ourselves.

Davi Akei's music can be found on TIDAL, Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Soundcloud, & Google Play,

Sergio Wonder's Jumpsuit Makes ELLE's "Best Street Style From AfroPunk 2016"

This year Curtis Bryant, who is no stranger to wearing Sergio Wonder threads at the music fest, commissioned me for a custom design. Being that Bryant is a friend of mine, I know his taste very well and who better to test the waters of drama with than he. Twenty-two glorious hours later, we had a perfect jumpsuit for Afropunk.

As the stylist on set with model Scott Cameran, working alongside Sinem Yacizi taught me more about the emotion that must be captured in fashion. Which is why the turkish fashion photographer is so keen on telling a story with her craft. "What's a story without empathy?" she questions.

Denim: The Rebellion of Choice.

Considering that I'm always on the hunt for the perfect denim piece, whether it be a pair of jeans, a classic indigo jacket, or a denim shirt (because I can never have enough of those), creating this capsule collection has been the best challenge as designer that also happens to be a part time consumer. With that in the forefront of my mind, journeying through the next campaign shoot with another one of my favorite geniuses, should be yet another exhilarating series of events.
